December 4: Skateboard

After two rounds of play, we had a perfect score. It wasn’t like it was an easy night…for one thing, there are no easy nights at DJ Quizzo, but we were alone in first, ahead of all the usual lucky guessers, rule benders, and (if anyone was playing a square game) the stacked teams of record store hacks, undercover A&R men, and blind-thirsty aficionados who’ve tucked away the liner notes of every record album since jazz.
There were flurries in the forecast, but I was sweating when the answer sheets for the final round were handed out. They were nothing but blanks. There’s no angle on blanks. No process of elimination. No taking a flier on which third-rate, C-side Christmas song is most likely from Greece. You either know it or you don’t.
If you know DJ Quizzo, you know he’s going to play the entire song, and he’s going to play it on vinyl. If it’s not on vinyl, he’s probably got a reason, and also you’re probably about to get quizzo-shanked with some serious baloney. For the final round, all we had to do was identify the title and artist for nine Christmas songs—nine songs that would be played backwards and merged into a single 23-minute track with no discernible breaks.
I could have sworn I heard backward Bono at some point. My teammate could have sworn he heard backward George Michael. We couldn’t figure out whether to write U2 or Wham!. They were both wrong, because we were both right: the correct answer was Band Aid, the charity supergroup featuring Bono, George Michael, Phil Collins, Boy George, Simon LeBon, and presumably all of the Boomtown Rats. It wasn’t our only error. We wound up in third, and out of the money.
And then I have to come home and evaluate a Lego skateboard? I have almost nothing to say about a Lego skateboard.
Rating
Fun ★★★☆☆
A skateboard is fun in principle. I guess. I’m sure it will be fun for Snowboarder Dude (or possibly Dog with Feast) to do some sweet tricks on it when it’s too warm to carve up the mountain, but for the second day in a row, there wasn’t really anything for me to build.
Ease of Build ★★★★★
The wheels snapped on. Some of them even turn.
Comprehensibility ★★★★★
It is definitely a skateboard (and a helmet).
Extra Parts ☆☆☆☆☆
There are no extra parts. Maybe the helmet is extra. IF YOU WANT A VIOLATION FROM THE SAFETY PATROL.
Overall ★☆☆☆☆
I get a stronger “some assembly required” vibe from a can of beans.
