December 2: Toy Mining Equipment

This is some sort of heavy machinery—something like an excavator, but with a drill attachment. The drill is conical, unlike the auger that would be found on skid loader set up for post hole drilling, although I also think that the scale is off for a skid loader, given the size of the cockpit. That’s why I immediately went to “mining” as an option, but it’s hard to say for sure. It’s also so small that it might be a toy for yesterday’s prize, “Snowboarder Dude with Substantial Goggles,” who was suspiciously wearing a bulldozer-themed sweater.
Rating
Fun ★★★★☆
Construction equipment is pretty fun. The drilling arm is articulated and the treads can rotate independently to navigate rough terrain, which is quite fun, although at this scale, “rough terrain” may include boulders the size of grains of kosher salt. Maybe a scooping or grabbing tool would be marginally more fun than a drilling tool, because I don’t know what you’d do with a step bit that, if real, would be the size of a Christmas tree, but I’m going to chalk that up to a lack of imagination on my part and not contemplate it further.
Ease of Build ★★★☆☆
It was fine. The only real problem was that the entire cab/tractor portion of this vehicle is like three Lego pips long, which is tiny. The instructive postage stamp wasn’t the most clear, but there were also only a handful of pieces in total, and we figured it out. And yes, I assume that “Lego pips” is not the correct term, and that both Lego HQ back in Denmark and perhaps the fandom (Brick Heads?) have a preferred nomenclature, but I’m going by The Walking Dead rules, where every tribe of remaining humans gets to name the zombies whatever they want.
Comprehensibility ★★★★☆
It makes sense, except for the aforementioned questions surrounding the drill attachment and possibly the intended scale. Does the amber warning light on top of it appear to be larger than a lighthouse’s Fresnel lens? Like big enough to get inside of it and still have room to Jazzercise? Sure, but it’s Day 2, and I’m not ready to start issuing demerits for the size of the running lights on every piece of toy mining equipment that comes down the pike.
Extra Parts ★★★★★
This came with an extra amber light and drill bit. Anything that comes with a spare bit is getting five stars from me.
Overall ★★★★☆
I dig it. (This is a mining equipment joke.)
